For example Calascio, a town situated within the “Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga” national park. One of the main reasons why tourists visit the town is the enchanting Rocca Calascio, one of the highest citadels in Italy.
It originally consisted of a great tower that was actually a watchtower. Afterwards, it was equipped with boundary walls and four cylindrical towers.
Subsequently, a small hamlet developed around the citadel, but it was abandoned after a severe earthquake that led the population to move to Calascio.
Only in the 80’s some buildings were restored and some other were turned into accommodation facilities, which also depended on the success of some films that had been shot there, including “Ladyhawke” and “The Americans”.
